Land Rover LCV2/3 Lightweight Concept!

Faced with ever-rising fuel prices and more stringent total vehicle emissions legislation, Land Rover initiated a program of work in the early 1990s (prior to BMW ownership) to investigate lightweight technologies for their production 4x4 vehicles. The Lightweight Concept Vehicle (LCV) program planned to investigate and develop new technologies, culminating in a vehicle that would enhance Land Rover’s off road ability and achieve a combined fuel economy of 40mpg.
The first vehicle in the program, code named LCV1, was based on a series 1 Discovery. The vehicle weight was reduced by replacing the steel chassis frame and body panels with aluminum replicas. The second, LCV2, was based on a Defender 90 concept and was powered by a 2.0L diesel. Through the design of a unique bonded and riveted spaceframe, the strength and durability of the aluminum vehicle was comparable to that of a production Defender. This design approach resulted in a significant reduction in the overall vehicle weight, giving a much improved fuel economy, increased performance with no loss of off road ability.
By 1997, the final vehicle to be manufactured in the program, LCV2/3, further developed the lightweight technologies to investigate their benefit on vehicle performance. The spaceframe design philosophy and construction techniques were essentially the same as those employed for LCV2. The upper structure, however, was redesigned to accommodate the change of body from station wagon to pickup and the development of the style to improve the overall vehicle aerodynamics. A fully revised cab interior also brought the vehicle up to date. The 2.0L diesel engine was replaced with aluminum 2.5L V6 petrol to improve the vehicle’s performance.
Unfortunately, the project never went beyond LCV2/3 due to budget constraints. Will this technology find its way into future Land Rovers? Stay tuned! For the time being however, enthusiasts can visit the Heritage Motor Center, UK where this concept is currently on display.

I guess you people are just dedicated on buying vehichles that are gas monsters to help feul the rising gas prices. I'm sure you people voted for Bush too.
What is the world coming to? When will you guys be happy? When everyone in the world has a vehichle that gets under 20 MPG and we are at war with any country that is not Christian and democratic?
Where is LR today ? Discovery 3 weight 2700 kg and hardly get bellow 13 lit/100km (sorry I'm from mainland), RR Sport has perhaps 50 kilos less. New SPACE FRAME Concept obviously doesn't work and LR will have to do it completly out of ALU otherwise forget lower fuel consumption
